Local fishermen and fish traders in Daulatdia, Goalanda, have held a protest march and human chain program to protest the collection of additional rent from them.
An hour-long human chain and protest march was held on the bypass road of Daulatdia Fish Market area from 7am to 8am on Sunday (April 27).
A protest march was held after the human chain. The protest march started from Daulatdia Fish Market, circled the Dhaka-Khulna Highway, Daulatdia Launch Ghat, Ferry Ghat, Market and Railway Station areas, and ended at the same place.
Daulatdia Bazar Businessmen Council President and Aratdar Md. Mohan Mondal presided over the human chain. Aratdar Anwar Kha Rezaul Karim, Goalanda Fishermen Cooperative Association President Ichak Sardar, General Secretary Achel Bepari, along with fishermen and businessmen, addressed the gathering.
The speakers at the human chain complained that although the rent was collected at the rate of 1 taka per cent earlier, the current lessee has increased it to 5 taka per cent. Due to the imposition of additional rent, fishermen are unable to sell fish in the Daulatdia market, which is pushing the market system to the brink of collapse. They said that if the lessees’ irregularities continue, the supply of fish in the market will decrease and traders will face serious financial losses.
They demanded immediate intervention by the administration to ensure the safety of fish traders.
