Internatioanal Desk: Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet for the first time on April 4 on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit to be held in the Thai capital Bangkok. Officials in Dhaka and Delhi confirmed this information to news agency UNB.

This will be the first meeting between the heads of government of the two countries after the change in the political landscape in Bangladesh. During his visit to Bangkok, Narendra Modi will meet leaders of various countries in addition to Dr. Yunus.

According to news agency PTI, the Indian Prime Minister will arrive in Thailand on Thursday (April 3) for a two-day visit. He will participate in the 6th BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Multi-Sectoral Technological and Economic Cooperation) summit there. Apart from India, leaders of Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan are expected to attend the summit.

During his visit, Modi will meet Thai Prime Minister Phatthana Shinawatra at the Government House in Thailand. He will be accorded a ceremonial reception there.

On the sidelines of the summit, Narendra Modi is also likely to meet the Bangladeshi Prime Minister and Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

In addition, the Indian Prime Minister will meet Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) and Queen Suthida on Friday.

It is not yet clear whether Myanmar’s military junta chief Min Aung Hlaing will attend this year’s BIMSTEC summit. Last week, a major earthquake caused extensive damage to the country’s second largest city, Mandalay, and other areas.

This will be the first face-to-face meeting of BIMSTEC leaders since the fourth BIMSTEC summit held in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2018. The last virtual summit was held in Colombo in March 2022.
