Fire breaks out at Secretariat at midnight, brought under control after 6-hour effort

There are some restrictions on the entry of fire service vehicles into the Secretariat, the heart of the administration, due to the terrible fire. It was especially difficult to enter large vehicles. Two large vehicles were forced to enter by breaking the Secretariat gate.

Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal, Director General (DG) of the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defense, said this at a briefing after the fire was brought under control on Thursday (December 26) morning.

He said, we received a message at 1:52 am that there was a fire in Building No. 7 of the Secretariat. Our unit reached by 1:54 am. A total of 20 units were deployed. Out of these, 10 units worked directly.

The fire broke out on four floors, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The cause of the fire could not be confirmed, he added.

The Director General of the Fire Service also said that a tragic incident had occurred. A firefighter was connecting a line from a water pump to a pipe at the first stage. A speeding truck hit him while crossing the road. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctor declared him dead.

When asked how the fire started, he said, initially it could not be confirmed that the fire started. It will be informed later.

The Director General of the Fire Service also said that building number 7 houses the Internal Resources Department, Financial Institutions Department, Posts and Telecommunications, Information Technology, Labor and Employment, Youth and Sports, Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives, Road Transport and Bridges Department.
