Special Desk: The National Garment Workers Federation and Ekta Garment Workers Federation have announced to surround the US embassy in Dhaka and submit a memorandum in protest against the increase in tariffs on Bangladeshi products in the US market. The US embassy will be surrounded and a memorandum will be submitted at 11 am next Wednesday. The next course of action will be announced from there, a message said. This information was given in a message signed by National Garment Workers Federation President Amirul Haque Amin and Ekta Garment Workers Federation General Secretary Kamrul Hasan on Monday (April 7). The message said that recently, US President Donald Trump has newly set the tariff rate for foreign products entering the country’s market in an executive order. In setting this new tariff, he has set an extremely inconsiderate and inhumane tariff on Bangladesh. Which will stop women’s liberation, women’s freedom and women’s progress in Bangladesh. The Trump administration has imposed new tariffs on a total of 63 countries, including 13 in the European Union. While the previous tariffs have not been increased for important garment exporting countries like Turkey, Brazil, Mexico and Morocco, the previous tariffs have been maintained. The message also said that US tariffs on 15 other countries in the world have been kept the same. But the tariff for Bangladesh has been more than doubled (from 15 to 37 percent). 84 percent of Bangladesh’s exports are from the garment industry. The vast majority of these exports are to the US market. Where 3.5 million women workers work in the garment industry in Bangladesh.
