The expulsion of 37 students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) has been withdrawn. The decision to withdraw their expulsion was taken at the university syndicate meeting on Wednesday afternoon amid a hunger strike by students demanding the resignation of the university’s vice-chancellor.
It is worth noting that the students started a six-point movement after a clash between general students and outsiders on February 18. After that, the university syndicate declared the campus and halls closed. In the incident, the KUET administration has temporarily expelled 37 students suspected of being involved in the incident. On the other hand, an outsider outside the KUET campus has filed a case naming 22 students.
On April 13, general students started a movement again demanding the opening of the halls. But there was no response. The students started a hunger strike from Monday afternoon demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Muhammad Machud. While 32 students started the hunger strike that day, five of them have already fallen ill and been admitted to the medical center.
Meanwhile, a three-member committee of the University Grants Commission (UGC) has begun an investigation at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET). They started talking to students from 10:30 am on Wednesday.
