Jhalakathi’s young entrepreneur Md. Azizul Haque has built a beautiful mango orchard on his own initiative, which will set a new example in the local economy in the future. This agriculture-based initiative has become a source of livelihood not only for himself, but also for many people around him.
After completing his studies and working in Dhaka, Aziz started planting fruit trees in 2014 with the idea of doing something in his own area. He started gardening on a small piece of fallow land next to his house in Pingri village of Shuktaghar union of Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi, but now his orchard has grown to 15 bighas. It has 5 varieties of sweet, high-quality mangoes.
When we went to the orchard to prepare this report, Azizul showed us around his entire orchard for an hour. It is a charming environment. Haribhanga, Amrapali, Himsagar, Kahito and other sweet mangoes are swaying on the trees. In the same garden, there are also jam, litchi and amar trees. There are fruit trees throughout the garden, and at the same time, Azizul Haque is busy preparing a duck, chicken and cow farm along with fish farming.
Aziz hopes to produce a few tons of mangoes from his garden this season. In the future, these mangoes will be supplied to various districts of the country including Dhaka through online and offline markets. He also wants to train local youth and develop them as entrepreneurs in agriculture.
Azizul said, “The beginning was not easy. I had to bear two or three losses in the first few months. But the encouragement, patience and hard work of my family have brought me to a position of success today.”
According to a local agricultural official, such initiatives will further strengthen the country’s agricultural sector and open new avenues of employment for the youth.
Azizul’s story proves that with desire and hard work, the foundation for success can be built on the soil of one’s own locality.
