Outgoing Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal commented that if general elections are held under a non-partisan caretaker government, the objectives and achievements can be more assured.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal announced his resignation at a press conference on Thursday (September 5). He made this comment at the time. Habibul Awal also announced the resignation of four commissioners in the press conference.

He said that the members of the commission perform their duties according to the constitution. During our work, we got the necessary support from the media, administration, law enforcement, armed forces. I remember it with gratitude.

Outgoing CEC said, from the experience, knowledge and understanding gained from the present and past, I feel it is my duty to leave some recommendations for the future for the kind consideration of the government. Due to the homogeneity of the population of Bangladesh, Bangladesh can be an ideal field for proportional representation (party based) elections. Also holding elections in four or eight phases, with a break of three to five days between each phase, can be administratively easier and more convenient. It will be better if we continue to introduce online filing of nominations and optimize the use of technology in the election process.

In the press conference, Kazi Habibul Awal said, “Finally, I would like to inform you that the honorable commissioners along with me have decided to resign due to the changing situation of the country. Today we will hand over the resignation letter to the Secretary of the Commission for submission to His Excellency the President.

Then the CEC signed the resignation letter and handed it over to Election Commission Secretary Shafiul Azim.
