The police released the two goat thieves who went viral after the video of them being caught by the crowd along with the stolen goats in Patuakhali’s Dumki. The incident took place yesterday at 7 pm on Friday in the Madrasa Bridge area of the upazila where two youths named Zahir (18) and auto driver Sajib Gazi (25) were handed over to the police along with stolen goats. Police, however, denied the arrest. According to eyewitnesses and viral video sources, around 7 pm in the Madrasa Bridge area of the upazila, in the presence of more than two hundred people including Srirampur UP member Md. Nasir Uddin Mridha, Angaria UP member Mizanur Rahman Sardar and Angaria Union Jubo League President Abu Zafar Howladar, a stolen Khasi goat along with Zahir (18 ) and Sajib (25) arrested two youths. Later, when the police station was informed, the SI of Dumki police station handed over Rajiv and his accomplices to the force. The whole incident was recorded by some local youths on mobile phones and broadcasted live on social media. Instead of taking legal action against the arrested thieves, including Khasi, they were released at night, causing a public reaction. President of Angaria Union Jubo League Zafar Howladar said, about two hundred people, including two UP members, stole goats and 2 thieves with their hands and left them to the police in immoral transactions, instead of reducing the crime trend, it will increase. The common people of the area are disappointed with such activities of the police. UP members Mizan Sardar, Nasiruddin Mridha and others also expressed similar disappointment over the incident. When the SI of Dumki police station called Rajib’s mobile phone to find out about this, the journalist hung up as soon as he introduced himself. After several more calls, he did not answer, so his statement could not be obtained. Officer-in-charge of Dumki police station Tarek Md. Abdul Hannan said, I am not aware of such an incident. SI asks Rajiv.
