Md. Aman Ullah:
Principal Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres broke iftar with Rohingya refugees. On Friday (March 14), they broke iftar with about one lakh Rohingya refugees at the Ukhiya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar. Earlier, Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Cox’s Bazar on the same flight at around 1 pm. They were welcomed at the Cox’s Bazar airport by Advisor to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Farooq-e-Azam. Faiz Ahmed, Senior Assistant Press Secretary to the Principal Advisor, said that the UN Secretary-General participated in various programs throughout the day. The news of the Principal Advisor and the UN Secretary-General coming to the camp together created excitement among the Rohingya. Rohingya leaders hope that the efforts of the two will give a boost to the repatriation process. The UN Secretary-General has visited the Rohingya camps several times before. However, this is the first time for Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus. More than 1.3 million Rohingya citizens of Myanmar are living in the Ukhia-Teknaf Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar, the world’s largest refugee camp. In the long eight years, not a single Rohingya has been able to be sent back to Myanmar. On the contrary, another 60-70 thousand Rohingya have fled from Rakhine State due to the recent conflict in Arakan.
