Dinajpur municipality mayor sentenced to one month imprisonment and one lakh rupees fine

 Dinajpur Municipal Mayor Syed Jahangir Alam was sentenced to one month imprisonment by the Appellate Division. At the same time, the court fined him Rs. BNP chairperson Khaleda Begum Zia’s verdict based on the Justice of the Appellate Division M. The sentence was imposed against Mayor Jahangir Alam for making indecent comments about Inayetur Rahim. Besides, he has been asked to surrender in Dinajpur court within a week. Otherwise, the court has ordered his arrest. A four-judge appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan passed the verdict on Thursday (October 12). Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal heard on behalf of Dinajpur Municipal Mayor in the court. Advocate Shah Manjurul Haque appeared for the petitioners. And Attorney General AM Amin Uddin was for the state. However, municipal mayor Jahangir Alam said that a review will be done against this verdict. Earlier, on August 17, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s ruling, Appellate Division Justice M. The Appellate Division summoned Dinajpur Municipality Mayor Jahangir Alam for making indecent comments about Inayetur Rahim. At the same time, the Supreme Court issued a show cause notice as to why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for contempt of court for making adverse comments on matters under trial in the Appellate Division. In addition, Mayor Syed Jahangir Alam’s statement about the judge was also asked to be removed from social media. Syed Jahangir Alam, mayor of Dinajpur Municipality, apologized unconditionally to the Appellate Division for making indecent comments about the judge after appearing on the summons order on August 24. Later, the Appellate Division fixed October 12 for the hearing of the contempt of court ruling issued against him. On this day, he was ordered to appear in court. The five-judge Appellate Division headed by the then Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui gave the order. It is to be noted that during BNP’s pre-announced program in Dinajpur on August 3, when Syed Mayor Jahangir Alam gave his speech, Justice M. Inayetur made adverse comments about Rahim and also made disparaging comments about the trial verdict. This statement of the mayor was circulated on social media. As the matter came to notice, four lawyers of the Supreme Court filed a contempt of court against him. They are – lawyer Harun Or Rashid, lawyer Mahfuzur Rahman Roman, lawyer Md. Moniruzzaman Rana and lawyer Shafiq Raihan Shaon.
