Hundreds of passengers narrowly escaped a potentially fatal collision between the intercity Ekta Express (705) and an oncoming freight train at Dinajpur railway station on Sunday night (November 17) in a span of just seven minutes. However, this incident is a proof of negligence of railway management, violation of law and gross mismanagement in passenger safety.

The intercity train left the station without line clearance papers during the incident. Station Master Farhana Yasmin Jolly rushed to flag and stopped the intercity train. But he is physically and mentally broken. He said, “I got sick myself while handling the incident.” It was a dire situation. After the incident, panic spread among the passengers.

A passenger said, “We almost died.” Such negligence cannot be accepted. I’m getting shivers thinking. Locals say such negligence on the part of the railways is very appalling and it could pose a big danger for the future.

Under the Railways Act, 1890 it is mandatory to obtain a line clearance paper from the Station Master before starting any train. But engine driver Mo Motaleb and guard Mo Taufiq ignored this rule. This is gross violation of Section 101 and 128 of the Railway Act.

Additional Railway Superintendent ABM Ziaur Rahman said that the neglect of duty of the engine driver and guard was obvious. However, there was no explanation as to why they broke the rules.

Locals say that if such negligence is repeated, the risk of major accidents will increase. They assured the railway authorities to take swift action. The railway authorities should immediately take strict action in this incident and reform the security system, so that passengers never face such danger again.
