The biennial conference of Comilla Metropolitan BNP is going to be held, Tuesday (February 25).
BNP has completed all preparations for the conference. The top leadership of Comilla Metropolitan BNP is going to be elected without any competition. The names of the finalists will be announced at the conference. BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman will join it virtually as the chief guest. BNP’s vice chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu will be present as the main speaker.
Since there are no other candidates, the current convener Utbatul Bari Abu is going to be the president of Comilla Metropolitan BNP, the current member secretary Yusuf Molla Tipu is the general secretary, and the current joint convener and former councilor of ward number 13, Rajiur Rahman Rajib, is the organizing secretary. 101-member committees were formed in 27 wards of Metropolitan BNP. A total of 2,727 voters from 27 wards were supposed to elect the president, general secretary and organizing secretary through votes.
According to metropolitan BNP sources, BNP is forming committees through council votes across the country. The party is also forming an election commission for the vote. A 5-member election commission was formed on February 17 to form the Comilla metropolitan BNP committee. Advocate Ali Akkas was made the chief election commissioner.
The election commission was formed by announcing the schedule for the metropolitan BNP committee elections through a press conference on February 19. After the schedule was announced, only one person purchased the nomination form for the posts of metropolitan BNP president, general secretary and organizing secretary.
Last Saturday (February 22) was the last day for withdrawal of nominations. Since no candidate withdrew his nomination on that day, the election commission formed by announcing the names of the final candidates for the posts of president, general secretary and organizing secretary. As a result, there is no need for grassroots leaders and activists to vote for these three important posts. The president, general secretary and organizing secretary are going to get the posts without a vote.
In this regard, Chief Election Commissioner Advocate Ali Akkas said, for each of the three posts where the election will be held, one person has submitted a nomination paper. Since no one withdrew on the last day of withdrawal of nominations, all three candidates are going to be elected unopposed on February 25.
Utbatul Bari Abu, who was finalized for the post of president of the Metropolitan BNP, said, ‘I also wanted a competitive election. But no one else bought the nomination. Whether someone will buy the nomination or not is a personal matter for each person. I want to make the Metropolitan BNP conference on Tuesday memorable through colorful arrangements. Our leaders and activists from every ward will join the conference. There is enthusiasm among the leaders and activists surrounding the conference.
Incidentally, although the Comilla City Corporation was established in 2011, the 44-member convening committee of the Comilla Metropolitan BNP was announced for the first time on May 30, 2022. Former Comilla South District Jubo Dal President Amiruzzaman Amir was made the convener and Comilla Metropolitan Jubo Dal General Secretary Yusuf Molla Tipu was made the member secretary. Utbatul Bari Abu was made the 14th joint convener in that committee.
Later, on July 27, 2022, BNP relieved Metropolitan BNP convener Amiruzzaman Amir from all levels, including primary membership, for violating party discipline. Later, the first joint convener Shawkat Ali Bakul was made the acting convener. Later, on August 31, 2022, a 25-member convening committee was announced in a letter signed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, making Utbatul Bari Abu the convener and Yusuf Molla Tipu the member secretary.
