Chinese President Xi Jinping told Indian President Draupadi Murmu that China-India relations should be further strengthened. At the same time, this relationship should be like a ‘dragon-elephant tango’, where both countries move together in harmony.

The heads of state of China and India exchanged congratulatory messages on Tuesday (April 1) on the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The message indicated that relations should be normalized after the 2020 border conflict.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China and India should ensure peaceful coexistence. I am ready to maintain close communication and coordination with the Indian leadership on international issues. At the same time, it is necessary to work together to maintain peace in the border area.

He also said that China hopes that India will create a transparent and fair business environment for Chinese companies and that bilateral cooperation will be further expanded.

On the other hand, Indian Ambassador to Beijing Xu Feihong said that China is interested in importing more products from India and wants to further strengthen trade cooperation between the two countries.

Xu Feihong told the Chinese state-run Global Times that we want Indian businesses to cross the Himalayas to invest in China and benefit from our economic growth.

China and India are talking about expanding trade at a time when the United States is preparing to formulate new tariff policies. India has already taken the initiative to reduce tariffs on American products to appease US President Donald Trump, who has called India a ‘tariff king’ and a ‘tariff abuser’.

In 2020, a clash between the Indian and Chinese armies in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh led to a significant deterioration in relations between the two countries. As a result, India imposed restrictions on various Chinese investment and technology companies, which are still in place.

However, the two countries announced the resumption of direct flights in January 2024 and signed a new agreement in October to resolve their border patrol issues. The two countries are currently in talks to conclude a preliminary trade agreement and are trying to resolve the tariff impasse.
