An old woman was robbed of her gold chain and earrings while she was reciting the Holy Quran in Boro Khalishakhali village of Pirojpur Sadar Upazila. Police have arrested a member of an inter-district gang of thieves in this incident.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Md. Mukit Hasan Khan issued a press release in this regard at Pirojpur Sadar Police Station on Wednesday (March 5) at 12 noon.
He said that at approximately 9:30 am yesterday (March 4), Maryam Begum (70), a resident of Ward No. 3 of Baro Khalishakhali village, was sitting in the middle room of her house reciting the Quran. At that time, Md. Milan Sheikh (40), father- deceased Sultan Rahman Sheikh, mother- Saleha Begum, of the same village, entered the house and tried to snatch the gold chain from her neck.
The old woman was shocked by the sudden attack. When she started screaming, the accused grabbed her by the throat and started beating her. At one stage, the accused snatched the locket from the old woman’s neck, a gold chain (weight: estimated 05 annas, value: estimated 45,000 taka) and a pair of gold earrings (weight: estimated 08 annas, value: estimated 75,000 taka).
While pulling off the earring, the old woman’s right earlobe was torn and left with a bloody wound. When the locals rushed to her screams, the accused quickly fled. Later, Mariam Begum was rescued in an injured condition and admitted to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital.
On the same day of the incident, the victim filed a case as a plaintiff at Pirojpur Sadar Police Station (Case No. 03, GR No. 37, Section 454/382 of the Penal Code).
The police, led by the officer-in-charge of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, quickly conducted a raid and arrested the accused Milan Sheikh from his own residence. After the arrest, during interrogation, a gold chain (05 annas) with a stolen locket and a gold earring (04 annas) were recovered from the waistband of his lungi and seized.
The OC of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station said, “The accused has been handed over to the court and efforts are underway to arrest other members of the gang.”
