Celebrating 50 years of Bangabandhu’s Julio Currie Peace Medal in Barura

The 50th anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman receiving the Julio Curie Peace Medal was celebrated in Barura, Comilla. On Sunday, May 28, Barura upazila administration organized a discussion, cultural program and prize distribution ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Julio Kuri Peace Medal of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the best Bengali father of a thousand years, at the Upazila Parishad auditorium under the chairmanship of Upazila Executive Officer Sabrina Afrin Mustafa. Barura Upazila Parishad Chairman ANM Mainul Islam spoke as the chief guest, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Lands) Md Mehedi Hasan, Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Nazrul Islam, Upazila Animal Resources Officer Dr Nasrin Sultana Tanu, Vir Muktijoddha Abdus spoke as special guests. Sattar, Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md. Saiful Islam was also present on this day, brave freedom fighter Abdus Sattar, public health engineer Noor Mohammad Shamim, social service officer Kamrul Hasan Roni, Barura police station SI Md. Shahalam etc. During this time, cultural programs were held with the participation of students from various educational institutions. At the end the prizes were distributed among the winners. Speakers in the program said that on May 23, 1973, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman received the International Medal. Ramesh Chandra, Secretary General of the World Peace Council, presented the Julio Currie Peace Medal to Bangabandhu. Ramesh Chandra said, “Bangabandhu is not only of Bengal, he belongs to the world and he is a friend of the world.” Julio Currie is one of the world’s other Peace Prize laureates. Basically, those who play a leading role in opposing imperialism and fascism and establishing humanity and world peace, are awarded this rank. The World Peace Council has been awarding the Julio Curie Medal since 1950.

After the death of French physicist John Frédéric Julio Curie in 1958, the World Peace Council named its Peace Medal ‘Julio Curie’ from 1959. Frederick’s original name was John Frederick Julio. Frederick’s wife Irene Currie. They are both Nobel laureate scientists. Irina’s parents are famous Nobel laureate scientist couple Madame Curie and Pierre Curie. After marriage, both Frédéric and Irene took surnames, one being John Frédéric Julio Curie and the other Irene Julio Curie. On October 10, 1972, at the meeting of the Presidential Committee of the World Peace Council in Santiago, the capital of Chile, Ramesh Chandra, Secretary General of the Peace Council presented a proposal to award the ‘Julio Currie’ peace medal in recognition of Bangabandhu’s contribution to the liberation movement of the Bengali nation and world peace. In the presence of 200 representatives of the Peace Council of 140 countries of the world, the decision was taken to award the ‘Julio Curie’ Peace Medal to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu. In view of this decision of the Peace Council, the then Secretary General of the World Peace Council, Ramesh Chandra Bangabandhu, presented the ‘Julio Curie’ peace medal to Bangabandhu at the event organized by the World Peace Council of the Asian Peace and Security Conference held in Bangladesh on May 23, 1973. The Peace Medal of the World Peace Council was an international recognition of the deeds and wisdom of the Father of the Nation. Bangabandhu was the first to receive this international honor in independent Bangladesh. Besides, many other Bengalis have received the Julio Curie Medal. Among them are Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru. Many other famous people have received the Julio Curie Medal for their pioneering role in the establishment of world peace. Notable among them are Fidel Castro, Salvador Allende, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, poet and politician Pablo Neruda, Martin Luther King, Leonid Brezhnev, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh and others.
