Darshan’s Carew and Company made a profit of Tk 152 crore by selling liquor in one year. In this financial year, the company has sold liquor worth Tk 438 crore 91 lakh. Which is the highest sales record in the history of the company.
Carew & Company Managing Director (MD) Mosharraf Hossain gave this information on Thursday (August 3). He said that in the financial year 2022-3, only the distillery unit (liquor) had the highest sales of the company. This time 57 lakh 73 thousand proof liters of liquor were sold. Which is about 3.5 lakh proof liters more than last year. The company sold more than 1 million proof liters of liquor in the year 2021-22 due to a sudden increase in demand.
Mosharraf Hossain said that Keru and Company will earn more than Tk 80 crore in this financial year if coordinated with other units. Company in previous year. The amount may be more or less after the final audit.
He said, this year, 59 lakh 67 thousand liters of alcohol has been produced from the distillery department. Out of this, 16 lakh 42 thousand 619 liters of foreign wine and 32 lakh 80 thousand 220 liters of Bengali wine are produced.
According to related sources, Carew & Company was established in 1938 in the Darshan of Chuadanga. Currently the company is producing sugar, distillery, pharmaceuticals, commercial farm, Akandbaria farm (experimental) and organic fertilizers in six units. Out of this only the distillery (liquor) unit is profitable.
According to sources, the company sold Tk 429 crore 35 lakh in the financial year 2021-22. In that year, all expenses including revenue collection and company management or profit of 49 crore 17 lakh taka. In the financial year 2020-21, the company sold liquor worth Tk 314 crore 87 lakh. 14 crore 63 lakh taka that year.
According to the company’s calculations, Carew sells more than 21,000 cases of liquor every month. The company markets various types of liquor in 175 ml, 375 ml and 750 ml bottles. A case contains 12 bottles of 750 ml, 24 of 375 ml and 48 of 175 ml. Carew & Company’s distillery unit produces nine brands of liquor. These include Yellow Level Malted Whisky, Gold Ribbon Gin, Fine Brandy, Cherry Brandy, Imperial Whisky, Orange Curacao, Zarina Vodka, Rosa Rum and Old Rum. Carew & Company has three sales centers at Dhaka, Chittagong and Chuadanga. Besides, Keru has 13 warehouses across the country. Sources in Carew’s office said the factory located at Darshan in Chuadanga is capable of producing more. Therefore, work is going on to take automatic production through a project at a cost of 102 crore taka . Apart from alcohol, the company also produces other products like vinegar, hand sanitizer, fertilizer, sugar and molasses.
In 1803, British businessman John Maxwell founded Carew & Company as a distillery. This is the first distillery in the subcontinent. After the partition of the country in 1947, it came under East Pakistan. Later in 1971 Bangladesh became independent. Since then it is considered as the wealth of Bangladesh. In 1973, the then government nationalized the Darshana distillery. Since then it is known as Carew & Company Bangladesh Limited.
