Padaganj in Rangpur is called the capital of broken mangoes. It is in that capital that mangoes are in demand. The yield is very less than last time. So mangoes are now being sold at twice the price in the market here. Market officials said that the price will increase further.
Various types of Guti, Khirshapat, Langra, Gopalbhog and Lakshmanbhog mangoes started arriving in Rangpur markets in the first week of this month. The prices of these mangoes are much higher than the last time they are being sold.
In Rangpur city terminal, Lalbagh and City raw markets, small variety mangoes are being sold at Tk 3000 to Tk 3500, Khirshapat Tk 3500 to Tk 5000, Gopalbhog Tk 3500-4000, Lakshmanbhog Tk 1200-1600, Langra at Tk 3300-4000.
Mango farmers and traders say that this year’s mango yield is less than half compared to last time. Due to which the mango market is very expensive. Due to high price, people are not buying this fruit as expected. Being a raw product, they are forced to sell even if they do not get the expected price due to the fear of rotting.
Ali has come to sell mangoes in Padaganj market. This mango seller said that he brought about 10 mangoes to the market. Buyers are reluctant to buy mangoes as the price is high. Mangoes are being sold in the market.
Another seller said that mangoes are very less this time compared to last time. Due to which the price of mango is very high. Several varieties of mangoes including Haribhanga are now available in the market. The price of mangoes may increase further in the future.
In Rangpur’s Padaganj, a syndicate is raising the price of mangoes on the pretext of low yield, complain the retail buyers. They said that the syndicate members are charging the price as per their wish.
Last year, at the beginning of the season, pitted mango seeds were sold at Tk 1200 to Tk 1300. But this time the sale of mangoes has started at a price of more than 2400 rupees. The price of all other mangoes is also high.
Apart from Padaganj Badarganj in Mithapukur of Rangpur district Haribhanga mangoes are sold more in the market of Rangpur city. Traders from other districts come to these market stalls and buy mangoes. But there are huge irregularities in the weight of mangoes in these markets. Mango farmers are held hostage by the smugglers who buy mangoes at very low prices.
It is known that one grain is equal to 40 kg. But taking more weight as hostage from farmers as seed. Farmers were forced to sell mangoes as there was no profit in protesting.
