Maharashtra Police has arrested eight Bangladeshis, including a woman, on charges of living in India without valid documents. Based on information received in advance, the Bangladeshis were arrested from Kalher and Kongaon areas of Bhiwandi city on Saturday (December 21) and Sunday. The arrested are between 22 and 42 years old.
This information was reported by the Indian news agency PTI. According to the Maharashtra Police, a case has been registered against the arrested persons under the Foreigners Act and the Indian Passport Act. Among those arrested, three were scrap dealers, two were laborers, a mason and a plumber.
Meanwhile, according to another Indian media outlet, the Indian Express, the Delhi Police identified 175 illegal Bangladeshis in a drive in Delhi on Sunday (December 22).
Police said that their 12-hour verification drive began in areas outside Delhi at 6 pm local time on Saturday. Efforts have been intensified to identify and arrest those who are staying without valid documents.
Earlier, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had directed all schools in Delhi to identify illegal Bangladeshi students and not issue them birth certificates. Apart from identifying illegal Bangladeshi students, the MCD has also ordered the vacating of areas allegedly occupied by illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in every zone of Delhi. The MCD Deputy Commissioner has asked for a report by December 31 stating the steps taken in this regard.
After the political change in Bangladesh on August 5, relations between Dhaka and India have deteriorated significantly. Since then, Delhi has intensified its arrest drive mainly against Bangladeshis in India. Even Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced the creation of a ‘good detention center’ in Mumbai for illegal Bangladeshis living in India.
