An initiative has been taken to construct a wooden bridge for public movement next to the collapsed iron bridge of Haldia Hat Bazar in Amtali, Barguna.
Upazila BNP Joint Convenor Maqbul Ahmed Khan and local Prabin Mandi also cooperated with the villagers. It has been informed by the sponsors that a wooden bridge of 200 feet length and 6 feet width will be constructed for the broken iron bridge under the initiative of Nannu Molla.
Member Secretary of Amtali Upazila Chhatra Dal and Haldia’s son Md Imran Khan said that after the collapse of the Haldiahat Iron Bridge on June 22, 2024, 50,000 people of Haldia and Chawra Union lost communication. After the collapse, there is no end to the suffering of the common people living in Haldia. This iron bridge is the only means of communication for the common people of Haldia Union including the Upazila Parishad and government offices and courts. Farmers take their produce to different places including the upazila sadar market by bearing extra cost and the farmers are suffering. School college students cannot go to educational institutions regularly.
When the elderly,children and women are sick, they have to go around the upazila town for treatment. There is no end to the suffering when a pregnant mother falls ill and has to be taken to the Upazila Health Complex. Considering the suffering of the public, we have taken an initiative to construct a wooden bridge with the cooperation of the public. The public responded to it, some with trees, some with labor, some with money are coming forward to build the wooden bridge. Hopefully, with the help of the public, it will be possible to construct the wooden bridge in a short period of time.
Joint convener of Amtali Upazila BNP. Maqbul Ahmed Khan said, after the iron bridge was broken, the movement of all the people of Haldia Chawra Union is facing problems. To reduce the suffering of the public, the construction of the wooden bridge has been started with everyone. The construction of the wooden bridge will be completed within a limited time with the public.
Local Prabin person Md Nannu Molla said that people will be able to move through the wooden bridge in a few days as the public has responded.
Local UP member Md Saiful Islam Sapon said, all kinds of cooperation will be given in the construction of the wooden bridge. Besides, local Moni Molla, Moti Molla, Nannu Pada, Zakir Hossain, Rasel Pada, Saha Gazi are working daily in the construction of the bridge.
It is to be noted that on June 22, 9 people died when a microbus fell into the river when the Haldiahat bridge collapsed while going to the bridegroom’s house. Since then, the movement of thousands of people of Haldia and Chawra Union has suffered.
Amtali Upazila Engineer Abdullah Al Mamun said on the phone, work is going on to construct a girder bridge in place of the broken iron bridge.
