Heavy rains and landslides in India’s Tripura state have caused flooding due to landslides and rains coming down from the upstream of Vijayanagar in Brahmanbaria.
Various roads of the upazila are submerged in water, disrupting the communication system.
Water has risen in at least 20 villages of the upazila. At least hundreds of families were trapped in water and took shelter elsewhere.
According to local upazila administration sources, heavy rain started from midnight on Tuesday in various places of Brahmanbaria district. Incessant rains and landslides from upstream led to waterlogging till Thursday morning in low-lying houses, roads and various fisheries projects in 15/16 villages.
In this, 45 hectares of agricultural land of the upazila was destroyed, 85 fish of the fishery project went to the reservoir. 55 families are under waterlogging. In addition, many important roads of the upazila are cut off due to rising water.
Bijaynagar upazila executive officer Syed Mahbubul Haque said that all the manpower of the upazila administration is working to deal with the floods caused by heavy rains and landslides.
Due to heavy rains and landslides, all railway connections between Sylhet and Chittagong and Dhaka have been closed since 12 noon due to water rising on the railway and various bridges of the railway line are at risk.
