Mosiur Rahman Rasel,Nalcity : Garbage has been dumped in the open in the launch ghat area of Sugandha shore of Nalchiti upazila of Jhalkathi. Looking around Sarojmin, it can be seen that garbage has been piled up on the banks of the river. Locals are avoiding the area due to the strong smell and moving elsewhere. However, there is anger among them. They have repeatedly requested the Nalchiti municipal authorities not to dump garbage there. However, despite their requests, garbage is being dumped there year after year. As there is no designated garbage disposal site in Nalchiti municipal area, the garbage collected from all over the city is dumped there by the municipal sanitation workers. As a result, river water is also being polluted along with environmental pollution. People along the river are affected by various water borne diseases.
Local businessman Shahadat Fakir said, our wholesale rice shop is in the market adjacent to Launch Ghat. I have been conducting business here for many years. A large number of buyers and sellers gather here on weekly market days. But a little far from our market, garbage collected from various places in the municipal area is being dumped on the river bank. The smell here is often suffocating. We demand that a dumping station be set up at Nalchithi as soon as possible. The environment will also be good and we will not have to face these problems.
He also said that since the Nalchiti port is located on the river, many traders from far and wide come here by boat to sell their goods. Farmers from different unions of the upazila also brought their produce by boat. Right next to the mooring of their boat is a pile of garbage which is creating problems for them from all sides. Many of them come from far away on the night before the weekly market and spend the night here by boat. River water is very important for them. Besides, there is a mosque next to the market. Many times Muslims have to use river water in case of electricity problems. Tabligh Jamaat Muslims often stay in this mosque, they find it difficult to bathe in the river and do other things. These issues should be evaluated and resolved immediately.
Khandaker Zahidul Islam, a local resident, said that those who used to use the river water due to the dumping of garbage here are unable to use the river water as it is polluted. Many people are suffering from various water borne diseases. Again it can be seen that during floods this garbage enters the locality with the flood water. So that the locals are suffering from various diseases. Again the environment is getting polluted. There are many families who are dependent on river water who use river water for their daily needs are also facing various problems. Some people are forced to use this water due to low income. They have no other choice. Again, they are financially weak and can change their residence. Keeping these things in mind, the municipal authorities should use modern technology instead of throwing garbage here. If that is not possible, I think that it should be arranged to dig a hole in the ground somewhere away from the residential area and dump the garbage inside it. We want to see that very soon.
Nalchiti Municipal Administrator said in this regard. Nazrul Islam said, I was not aware of this matter. Now that we know, we will try to find a better solution as soon as possible.
