International Desk: The Arakan Army, a rebel group in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, has seized the military headquarters. With this, the junta forces have lost their second regional command center. Recently, the military forces have faced widespread resistance from the rebels across Myanmar.
The Arakan Army said that after two weeks of fierce fighting in Rakhine state, the western military command has been taken over.
However, there has been no comment from the spokesperson for the Myanmar military government on this matter so far.
The army seized power in 2021 by overthrowing the civilian government. Since then, the country has been in a civil war. That is, ethnic groups in various states are fighting against the government. Initially, they protested against the junta forces, but later it turned into an armed conflict.
In 2023, the Arakan Army launched an attack against the junta. In August, the Arakan Army captured the northeastern city of Lashio. This shows their ability to seize a regional command for the first time in Myanmar’s history.
Some Rohingya activists say the Arakan Army targeted their community during an operation in northern Rakhine. Thousands of Rohingya then fled to Bangladesh for safety. The Arakan Army has denied the allegations.
