The Ministry of Local Government has declared vacant the post of BNP leader Tazkin Ahmed Chishti, the mayor of Satkhira municipality, on several charges including being involved in anti-state ‘subversive’ activities. The notification was issued on Thursday (November 23).

Tajkin Ahmed Chishti is the member secretary of Satkhira Municipal BNP. He was the mayor of Satkhira municipality elected for two consecutive terms.

The Ministry’s letter mentions, involvement in anti-state sabotage activities against BNP leader Tazkin Ahmed Chishti, mayor of Satkhira municipality, participation in municipal contracting work, devaluing of council members and non-implementation of council meeting decisions, planned ineffectiveness of municipal water department, contractors to tarnish the image of the government. The seat of Mayor of Satkhira Municipality was declared vacant from November 23 as per Section 38(12) of the (Municipalities) Act, 2009 as the motion of no-confidence moved by 12 councilors of the municipality was accepted on allegations of non-issue of work order, involvement in various activities detrimental to the interest of the municipality.

In the letter, a copy has been sent to the relevant departments of the government including the Election Commission to conduct by-elections for the vacant posts.
