International Desk:
A woman has died after being set on fire in Brooklyn, New York. Police have arrested one person in connection with the incident. In a statement, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described Sunday’s incident as “one of the most heinous crimes ever committed.” BBC, Al Jazeera reported.
She said that on Sunday morning local time, the woman was probably asleep inside an F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station in Brooklyn. At that time, an unknown person approached her and set her clothes on fire with a lighter. Within seconds, her body caught fire and she died at the scene.
It is not yet clear what prompted the suspect to do such a thing. Police are working on the matter. However, police have not released the identity of the deceased woman.
Police said that the two did not speak before the attack. They believe that the attacker and the woman did not know each other. Police officers patrolling the station rushed to the scene after seeing the fire and smoke. They found a man standing inside the compartment, his entire body on fire.
A short distance away, a man was sitting on a bench on the platform. The man was wearing a gray hoodie. Police arrested a suspect on Sunday. The man was also wearing the same clothing. He was arrested on another subway.
Police said they tried to put out the woman’s body on the spot when they arrived. But emergency workers pronounced her dead.
