At least 10 people were killed in a fire on the Punalur-Madurai Express train in Tamil Nadu, India. Another 20 people were injured in this incident.
The fire broke out in a compartment of the train standing in front of the Madurai railway station in the early hours of Saturday (August 26). News from NDTV.
Madurai District Collector Sangeeta confirmed the death. The injured have been admitted to hospital.
It is known that the fire broke out in the compartment around 5:15 am. Initially, it is believed that the fire may have started from the illegally kept gas cylinder. The fire was brought under control around 7:30 am with the efforts of railway and firemen.
Also the coach of the Punalur-Madurai Express was hired privately. Its passengers came from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. They started their journey from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh on 17th August. They were supposed to reach Chennai on Sunday.
A statement from Indian Southern Railway said, “The carriage hired for the purpose of the party was kept separately near Madurai station. The passengers of the coach were traveling with hidden gas cylinders. which is illegal. It is believed that the fire started from this gas cylinder.
In the meantime, a donation of Rs 10 lakh has also been announced to the families of the victims.
