If the price of eggs is not under control, import of eggs will be allowed in coordination with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, said the Minister of Commerce Veer Muktijodha MP Tipu Munshi.
He said this while replying to the questions of the reporters after the chief guest’s speech at the opening ceremony of TCB’s products including rice for the month of August among one crore ‘family card holders’ low-income families across the country organized by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh-TCB at Mohammadpur Town Hall in the capital today.
The Minister of Commerce said that if the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock determines the price of eggs in the market, we will conduct raids and control them through the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection. As the egg market is suddenly unstable, consumer rights are conducting day and night raids and fines in various corners of the capital.
He also said that the Ministry of Commerce cannot import eggs at will. In that case, import permission from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will be required. There is no opportunity to import eggs without their cooperation. I hope a decision will be made soon. The minister also said that the initiative to import eggs will be taken only after the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock gives a green signal.
In response to another question from the journalists, Tipu Munshi said that apart from importing sugar from the international market, it is also purchased from the local market. Because, sometimes sugar is delayed in reaching the country. Again, when the ship arrives at the port, it takes time to clear due to various complications. By doing this, we have to gain momentum to supply the demand. For this reason, sugar is purchased from the international market as well as from the local market.
When asked about the import of daily essential goods from India under quota, the minister said that he will visit India this month and will have a meeting with the commerce minister of that country when a decision will be announced in this regard.
He also said in his speech, Ministry of Commerce through TCB has started giving rice to low income families along with pulses, sugar and oil through one crore family cards on the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina never wants poor people to suffer.
Tapan Kanti Ghosh, senior secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, spoke as a special guest on the occasion. Brigadier General Md. Ariful Hasan, Chairman of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh-TCB, Alhaj Md. Shafiqul Islam, Councilor of Ward No. 31 of Dhaka North City Corporation were present among others.
