The water of the Teesta river has crossed the border due to the mountain torrents coming down from the upstream of India and few days of rain.

44 cisterns of Teesta Barrage, the country’s largest irrigation project, have been opened for water control.

River flow was recorded at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage, the country’s largest irrigation project, at 6 am on June 18 (Monday), flowing 5 cm above the flood line and at 9 am below 5 cm.

Meanwhile, due to the sudden rise in Teesta water, it is reported that many houses in Char area along with low lying areas along the river have been flooded.

The farmers are worried.

Along with this, they are also faced with the problem of livestock feed.

Executive Engineer Asafuddaula said that the water level of Teesta has increased due to the heavy rains of the last few days and the hill slopes coming down from the upstream.  By opening the 44 gates of the barrage, efforts are being made to control the water.  If the water rises like this, there is danger of flooding, he said.

He also said that due to the rise in water, various areas of Teesta have been flooded.  We have built embankments along the Teesta River.  Work is still ongoing at some places.  Besides, geo bags have been placed in the prone areas.  We are ready to deal with emergency situations and are working to control any situation.  Water Development Board is always prepared to deal with floods.

Meanwhile, due to the sudden increase in the Teesta water, the locals said that water has risen in the lower areas along the river in Lalmonirhat and many homesteads in Char.  Apart from this, the farmers are worried about crop loss due to inundation of the crop fields.  Due to the sudden rise in water, they are also in trouble with food for cattle and birds.  Common people are in trouble due to water entering the low areas including Gokunda of Sadar upazila, Mahishkhocha of Aditmari upazila, Shailmari of Kaliganj upazila, Bairati and Rudreshwar areas of Hatibandha upazila, Gaddimari, Sindurna, Saniajan union of 5 upazilas.

In several places of Hatibandha Upazila of the district, it is known that from Thursday, the water of the river has suddenly increased due to the upstream water coming down from India.  Although the water receded a bit on Saturday, since last night, the water has been rising again.  Due to this, the people of Teesta banks are spending their days in fear of floods.  Talking to some people of the upazila, it is known that suddenly, Teesta water has increased and entered many places here.

Small children, cows-goats and poultry along with farm crops are in danger.  Also, there is a shortage of clean drinking water.

They also said that due to the increase in water in the river, erosion has occurred in several places.  Many are demolishing their houses and evacuating them.

Gaddimari Union Parishad Chairman Abu Bakkar Siddique Shyamal said, due to the rise of water in many places in my union, many people have been trapped in water. I am visiting different areas and standing next to the people who are suffering.

In this regard, Hatibandha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazir Hossain said, I have spoken with the chairman of various unions of the upazila and the public representatives in this regard. Water rose in some areas.  I read and saw the news that the water in many areas has gone down.  He said that if there is a flood, necessary measures will be taken after inquiry.
