UNO stopped work due to irregularities in construction of school building in Rangpur

There have been allegations of irregularities in the construction of buildings in Chandamari Government Primary School of Betgari Union of Gangachra Upazila of Rangpur. Locals blocked the contractor for working with low quality materials. Later, UNO and Thana police went and rescued him. UNO Nahid Tamanna ordered to stop the construction work till further instructions. In this incident, UNO formed a three-member investigation committee on Sunday afternoon. Upazila Assistant Engineer Abdul Hanif is the convener of the three-member committee. Upazila Assistant Engineer Mosharraf Hossain and Deputy Assistant Engineer Sajedur Rahman are members. The inquiry committee has been directed to submit the inquiry report to the UNO office within seven working days. According to the sources of the Upazila Engineer, the construction of the two-storey building of the school started eight months ago under the Directorate of Upazila Engineers. 90 lakhs of money has been allotted in this. Local contractor Rajiv Miah got the job. According to the locals, the work started on the roof of the second floor of the building last Saturday. It uses low quality brick mortar and sand. Masonry is also done with low quality bricks. So the locals asked the contractor to use good quality materials that day. When the contractor got angry and abused, the people blocked him. Apan Chandra Roy of the area said that the building is being constructed with low quality bricks and sand. But there is no one to see. If the building is constructed like this, teachers and students will be at risk. On condition of anonymity, two residents of the area complained that the workers were working with low-quality bricks on Saturday. If this is interrupted, the contractor will not stop the work under influence and will abuse in non-verbal language. The people of the area got angry and blocked him. Later, the administration people came and rescued the contractor. A parent of a student in Chandamari area said that buildings are being constructed using low quality bricks, cement and sand. If a building is constructed with these materials, it may collapse within a few days. Our children study here. They will be at risk of death. Therefore we have stopped the work. UNO came to the scene and found evidence of working with substandard materials and stopped it. Chandamari Government Primary School Principal Shahnaz Begum said that the school was closed on Friday and Saturday. I did not go to school those two days. On this occasion the contractor was working with low quality bricks and sand. When the contractor Rajiv Mia was contacted, he said on the phone, I was in Dhaka. Two thousand substandard bricks were taken to the school by mistake. I returned it as the locals objected. But no one blocked me. When asked about the UNO stoppage of work, contractor Rajiv Mia said that immediately UNO came and found some low-quality bricks. Forbidden to work until they are removed. The bricks have already been removed. Upazila Engineer Mojidul Haque said that the preliminary evidence of UNO working was found to be irregular in the construction of low-quality school buildings, the work was stopped. Necessary action against the contractor is underway. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nahid Tamanna said on phone on Monday that the fact of construction of building with low quality materials was found. Construction work has been stopped. A three-member investigation committee has been formed in this incident. Strict action will be taken against the contractor if the report is received.
