Stench of garbage in Cox’s Bazar municipal area makes public life miserable

Goldighi area of Cox’s Bazar Municipality has several important institutions including educational institutions, government and private offices, hospitals, stadiums. Due to which thousands of people move in the area for various activities. However, people’s life has become miserable due to the piles of garbage lying around Baidyaghona, Ghonapara, Kiangpara Buddhist Temple, BKepal, Hospital Road and Mohajer Para Road around Goldighi. The permanent residents of these areas complain that the public representatives are all busy with election campaigns. So no one is looking to supervise the removal of these garbage. When asked about the garbage, Mayor Mujibur Rahman said that every day at least 30 to 40 cleaners are cleaning the garbage of Oligli along with the main road of the city. However, if there is any litter on the road, it will be cleaned. During the inspection of the area, it was seen that the pile of garbage on the road was spreading stench all around. Pedestrians are walking on that road with handkerchiefs on their noses. Traders around the garbage heap are trying to get rid of the stench by using handkerchiefs on their noses. Sanjit Jana, who lives in the area, there is no dustbin anywhere on the road in Goldighi area. Household garbage is thrown on the street or in the nearby drain. Everyone is busy with the election campaign. There are no garbage collectors. This road has to be traveled four times a day. One has to hold one’s nose and walk in extreme heat wave. Goldighi area falls in ward number 8. Rajbihari Das, the current councilor of this ward, has also become a candidate for the post of councilor. He is spending busy time with the election campaign. When asked about this, Rajbihari said that there are dustbins at every intersection for throwing garbage. But people do not throw garbage in the dustbin and pile it on the road. In the morning, the cleaners come and remove the garbage. The drain of the nearby Ghonapara road is also full of garbage. The stench is emanating from the open drain. People are walking by holding their noses. There was no dustbin anywhere in seven kilometers of the two roads. The permanent residents of Ghonapara area said that 70 percent of the 10,000 voters of at least seven areas including Ghonapara, Vaidyaghona, Khanja Manzil belong to Sanatan religion. Most of the people live in government lands and hills. Due to this, the roads have not developed much. Even after visiting Ward No. 7 Pahartali, Rahmania Madrasa and Kachhpiya Pond, Teknaifya Hill and Ward No. 6 BGB Camp, City College and Bus Terminal area, piles of garbage were seen at the intersections of the roads. Council candidate Jasim Uddin said that everyone is about the election campaign. No one is paying attention to garbage. On June 12, Cox’s Bazar Municipal Election will be held. 5 people are contesting for the post of mayor, 58 for the post of general councilor and 16 for the post of reserved women councilor.
