Aditmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Lalmonirhat GR Sarwar said that the number of disabled children is high in tobacco farming areas.  As an alternative to poison ivy tobacco for child protection, cultivation of vegetables including maize should be increased.

He said this at the World No Tobacco Day discussion meeting at the upazila auditorium on Wednesday (May 31) morning.

Bangladesh has the highest number of smokers in Asia.  Smoking not only harms the individual but also harms the non-smokers around.  Tobacco cultivation does not only harm the human body.  Fertility of land also wastes energy.  UNO GR Sarwar also commented that the government is implementing a comprehensive program to discourage tobacco cultivation.

On the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day organized by the Upazila Parishad, a colorful rally went out and circled various roads and met in a discussion meeting.

Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Rojatun Jannat, Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozammel Haque, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mofizul Islam, Primary Education Officer NM Shariful Islam Khandkar and freedom fighter Abdul Hamid Molla among others spoke in the discussion meeting.
