Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Saudi Arabia have exchanged about 900 prisoners as a result of talks to end the war and establish peace.
This is the first prisoner exchange between the Houthi rebels in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Friday (April 14) about 900 prisoners from both sides had been released and exchanged.
Witnesses and Houthi-run Al-Masirah television said the first two flights landed simultaneously in the government-held city of Aden and 125 in the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa around noon on Friday.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which is in charge of managing the prisoner exchange process, said on Friday (April 14) that several of the organization’s planes would be used to transport the prisoners. Delivering prisoners between six cities in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
It should be noted that thousands of people have lost their lives in Yemen’s long-term conflict and millions of people are facing famine. This war is considered as a ‘proxy war’ between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Iran-backed Houthi rebels overthrew the ruling government in 2014 and seized control of Sanaa. Later, the Saudi-led military coalition launched a military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen.
