Habibur Rahman Munna:
A court has ordered the jailing of six lawyers, including former president of the Comilla Bar Association and former public prosecutor Advocate Mostafizur Rahman Liton, in a case filed over an attack on students in front of the police lines in Comilla city during the July revolutionary student movement.
After a hearing on Monday (April 21) afternoon, Comilla Senior District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Mahabubur Rahman’s bench rejected the bail of one of the six accused in the case and ordered them to be sent to prison.
Apart from former Comilla Bar Association president Mustafizur Rahman Liton, former Bar Association general secretary Jahangir Alam Bhuiyan, former APP AMM Mohin, advocate Zahur Hasan Chowdhury Sohag, advocate Saiful Islam Bhuiyan and advocate Zakir Hossain have been sent to jail in this August 3 case.
The matter of being sent to prison was confirmed by Advocate Kaimul Haque Rinku, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Comilla Court.
He said, there are a total of 261 accused in this case. On August 11, Inzamamul Haque Rana, one of the organizers of the Comilla Metropolitan Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, filed the case as the plaintiff. 24 accused in this case were present at the hearing. The court ordered to send six of them to jail. Two of the accused in this case, Adv. Ziaul Hasan Chowdhury Sohag and Adv. Moin, are absconding. Warrants have been issued for the absconding accused.
Regarding the verdict, the leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement said that the hellish violence that took place in Comilla on August 3 must be ensured through the courts. Many lawyers involved in the violence must be brought to justice and set an example. If any lawyer fails to cooperate in ensuring the trial of the accused in this case, they demanded that necessary action be taken against them as well.
Meanwhile, during the hearing of the case, several leaders of the anti-discrimination student movement and the general student public began chanting slogans demanding justice for the accused in the court premises. In addition, eggs were thrown at the accused while they were being sent to jail.
