The poisonous Russell’s Viper has once again increased in the char area of Rajbari’s Goalanda upazila. It is also known as Chandrabora in the local language. At the same time last year, Russell’s Viper was a terror among farmers. In the last two weeks, four farmers, including a woman, have sought treatment at the hospital for Russell’s Viper bites in this area. Locals said that farmers are afraid to even go to the field due to fear of the poisonous Russell’s Viper. Doctors said that only those who are in Kamral should seek medical advice. And the upazila administration says that farmers will be given gum boots and gloves for the time being and awareness meetings will be held.
Maleka Begum, a resident of Baherchar Daulatdia area, fell ill after being bitten by a poisonous Russell’s viper while cutting cow grass in Majlispur Char area of Goalanda Upazila of Rajbari on Friday (April 18) afternoon. The farmers and farmers accompanying her took her to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, where doctors shifted her to Faridpur Medical College for better treatment. Earlier, last week, farmers Shukur Sheikh, Sagar Sheikh and Aslam Mia were bitten by a poisonous snake Russell’s viper in Char Majlispur and Char Mahidapur.
Locals said that working in the char area has become difficult due to the plague of snakes. The situation is similar in several areas including Char Karneshna and Mahidapur Char in Daulatdia Union.
Although the fields are full of ripe crops, they are afraid to go to the field for fear of snakes. Agricultural work is being severely disrupted in these crop-producing char areas. Those who go to the field always think that a snake has come and bit them.
In this regard, Dr. Sariful Islam, Resident Medical Officer of Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, told Banik Barta that a doctor’s advice must be sought in case of a poisonous snake bite. Meanwhile, even though there is sufficient antivenom in case of snake bite, there is no support in the veterinary hospital to take the next steps after administering antivenom, so such patients are sent to Faridpur Medical College Veterinary Hospital.
Goalanda Upazila Executive Officer of Rajbari Md. Nahidur Rahman said that the name of the new apo in Goalanda Upazila is “snake”, so awareness programs will be carried out with the local agriculture and animal resources department and farmers to avoid snakes. He said that farmers will be given gum boots and gloves. “
It is worth noting that last year, at the same time, four farmers died and about fifteen were injured after being bitten by the poisonous Russell’s viper or Chandrabora in Goalanda, Rajbari.
