 Sylhet Correspondent:

Sylhet City Corporation Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman said that Honorable Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus gave us the idea of a ‘three-zero world’. These include reducing poverty, unemployment and carbon emissions to zero. This is one of the most popular and effective models in the world today for financial independence, creating a working manpower and improving the environment. He showed how the use of renewable energy, environmentally friendly technology and responsible production systems can save the world. He highlighted the need to create a green economy and the importance of sustainable business practices. Therefore, there is no alternative but to reduce pollution to build a three-zero world. We have to be aware now, thinking about our future generations.

He also said that Sylhet has been flooded repeatedly in the last three years. Sylhet was affected by three floods in 2024. These floods are caused by heavy rains in a short period of time due to the impact of climate change. We live in urban areas. There are not enough green forests or trees here. We build concrete buildings, and we are destroying the soil, rivers, and canals by dumping garbage and polythene. As a result, the soil, rivers, and canals are no longer able to absorb enough water. Earlier, people slept at night without fans. Now, they cannot sleep without fans and ACs. The world is getting hotter day by day. We are all feeling the effects of climate change. For example, we build various types of roads in Sylhet. We do RCC, asphalt, and carpeting work. But the way rainfall and floods have increased in the past few years, we now have to think about building roads. If we carpet roads, they will not last even a year. They will be blown away by heavy rain. So we have included climate change in our design and are moving forward in consultation with those who are working on these issues. If we want to build houses in Sylhet now, we have to get out of the old process and build them in accordance with the environment. To avoid waterlogging and earthquakes, tall and sustainable structures must be built. We must also focus on greening. Trees must be planted in the courtyards of houses in the city. If that is not possible, at least trees can be planted in tubs on the balconies or roofs of houses. The population of Sylhet is currently about 1 million. Houses are being built out of necessity. However, care must be taken not to pollute the environment. We have continued to maintain cleanliness to keep the city beautiful.

He said these things as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the two-day Climate Fair-2025 organized with the support of the Sylhet City Corporation and jointly by the Islamic Relief Bangladesh, the Iqra Project, and YouthNet Global at the Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar in the city’s Chouhatta on Thursday (April 17) at 5 pm.
Chaired by Youthnet Global Executive Coordinator Sohanur Rahman and Capacity Development Coordinator Nazmun Nahid, the closing ceremony was attended by special guests, including Sylhet Meteorological Department Meteorologist Shah Md. Sajeeb Hossain, Sylhet Press Club President Ikramul Kabir and Chaitanya Publishing Publisher Rajib Chowdhury. Islamic Relief Bangladesh’s Sylhet Project Manager Md. Atiqur Rahman delivered the vote of thanks.
The guests presented crests to the stalls participating in the fair as special honors. During the event, prizes were distributed among the winners of quizzes, drawing and dress-up competitions related to climate change and adaptation.
