Laying emphasis on protecting the nearly extinct native fish species, Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar said, “To meet the meat needs of all the people of the country, we must work to protect all types of fish, including native fish species that are on the verge of extinction. At the same time, the production of farmed fish must also be increased using the right methods.”
On Wednesday morning, April 16, Fisheries and Livestock Advisor Farida Akhtar made these remarks in her speech as the chief guest at a workshop titled “Information at the Central Level of the “Infrastructure Development Project (Phase 1) to Increase the Capacity and Fish Production of Government Fish Farms” under the Department of Fisheries at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council Auditorium in the capital.
Addressing the workshop, the Fisheries and Livestock Advisory Officer said that many people are working unplanned while cultivating fish commercially. The sincere efforts of the fisheries officers should continue to make them aware and trained. He urged everyone to come forward to increase the production of farmed fish in a planned manner.
The fisheries advisor said, “Local fish species are unique in taste and nutritional value. Local fish is a delicious animal protein for almost all people, young and old. And no other country has so many species of fish. We have to protect the fish that are almost on the verge of extinction.” Mentioning the contribution of fisheries officers and fish farmers to the country, he said, “All projects should be made ideal and of international standard.” And for this, the government is ready to provide all kinds of cooperation.
Ninety percent of the country’s fish were once indigenous. Its quantity is decreasing day by day. We must be aware of the conservation of indigenous fish. At the same time, the fisheries advisor believes that everyone should work together to increase the production of farmed fish.
Under the chairmanship of Director General of Fisheries Department Dr. Md. Abdur Rouf, Secretary (Routine Responsibilities) of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Tofazzel Hossain, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Syeda Nawara Jahan also spoke. Senior officials of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, officials of the Department of Fisheries, officials of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, and officials of the Public Works Department were present at the event.
The keynote address was presented by Md. Mashiur Rahman, Project Director of the Infrastructure Development Project (Phase 1) to increase the capacity and fish production of existing government fish farms.
It is worth noting that one of the objectives of this project is to increase fish production in the country by 30 percent by 2028 through the development of government farms. In addition, to expand technology, it is necessary to establish advanced fishing technology in farms, preserve reproductive fish with improved genetic quality, and develop skills to increase the technical capacity of the manpower employed in fish farms.
