Comilla Burichang in 15 April Abdullah Al Mamun, the controversial contractor of Nimsha’s raw market and the convener of the Mainamati Union Awami Jubo League, has been arrested in a special operation by the joint forces. He was arrested on Monday (April 15) night and handed over to Burichang Police Station.
According to police sources, he was sentenced to prison as per a court verdict in a previous case filed against him. After his arrest, he was sent to jail through the court.
According to local sources, Mamun was involved in terrorist activities in the Cantonment area by raising arms during the July 24 student movement. At that time, he tried to suppress the student movement by spreading panic. At the same time, he took control of the Nimsha raw market, embezzled a large sum of money and established himself as an influential ‘godfather’ of the area.
Locals have alleged that Mamun has been perpetrating atrocities and torture in the area for a long time. The news of his arrest has drawn mixed reactions from across the area. Law enforcement officials said that additional allegations against him are being investigated and necessary legal action will be taken.
