Desk news: A journalist’s mobile phone has been seized and the video and pictures deleted on the orders of the Kurigram Police Superintendent for recording videos and taking pictures in Chilmari in Kurigram. The incident took place at around 10:30 pm on Thursday (April 10).
It is learnt that on that morning, two groups clashed over the allegation of harassing a mother and daughter who were walking on the Chilmari-Haripur Teesta Bridge. Upon receiving the information, the Kurigram Army immediately went to control the situation. After the incident, Kurigram District Police Superintendent Mahfuzur Rahman visited the scene at around 10:30 pm. At that time, when Swadesh Pratidin correspondent and Chilmari Journalists Forum General Secretary Jahangir Alam Saddam went to take pictures and videos for the purpose of gathering news, the Police Superintendent ordered him to take the phone away. In this, the Police Superintendent’s bodyguard took the journalist’s phone away and deleted the recorded video. The Superintendent of Police was not deterred by this, he said to the journalist, ‘I will fire the media’. The journalist community of Chilmari and the district has strongly condemned this incident.
The victim journalist Jahangir Alam said, after hearing the news of the arrival of the Superintendent of Police at the spot, the SP attacked me while I was taking videos and pictures. When the journalist was identified, he became even angrier and asked me to take away the phone in my hand, and a policeman took away the phone and deleted the pictures and videos.
Ramna Model Union Parishad Chairman Golam Ashek Aka said, I was a little away at that time. Later, I heard the matter from the journalist.
Kurigram Press Club Acting General Secretary Mahfuzar Rahman Tutor said that no government official can behave like this with a journalist. For this, he should publicly apologize. Because he is an employee of the republic, he should behave well with everyone.
Chilmari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdur Rahim said, the SP sir came after 10 pm on Thursday. But I am not aware of the incident of the phone being taken away.
Despite multiple calls and messages to Kurigram Police Superintendent Mahfuzur Rahman, his comment was not received.
