It is worth mentioning that on the night of April 6, 2025, a group of unidentified individuals killed Mohammad Sujan Mia by repeatedly stabbing him with sharp knives at an illegal chatpati (snack) and fuchka (pani puri) stall in front of Moulvibazar City Corporation. Following this, the victim’s brother Enamul Haque Suman filed a case (No. 15, dated 08/04/2025) with the Moulvibazar Model Police Station against unidentified assailants. The sudden and untimely death of Advocate Sujan Mia cast a shadow of deep sorrow over the district headquarters and the legal community. The following day, the Moulvibazar District Bar Association observed a full strike in the courts. A human chain was also formed on the court premises, and a memorandum was submitted to the District Commissioner and Police Superintendent, demanding the immediate arrest of the assailants within 24 hours.
On April 9, 2025, the police conducted an operation and arrested five suspects, who were sent to jail through the court. According to the police, the murder was planned as a result of a previous conflict with Nazir Mia, also known as Mujib (25), from Khalishpur village in Moulvibazar. It was claimed that Nazir Mia hired contract killers through a man named Lakhan to murder Misbah, a security guard working at the Agrani Bank in the same village. On the night of April 6, Abdur Rahim, a person connected to the plan, used video calls on mobile apps to identify Misbah, informing the plotter Nazir Mia. After identifying the target, the murder took place. However, due to a close resemblance in appearance, young lawyer Sujan Mia was mistakenly murdered instead of Misbah.
The case has raised questions about whether there may be other underlying reasons for the murder, and both his colleagues and concerned citizens have called for further investigation into the matter. The human chain and protest rally were attended by leaders of Corruption-Free Bangladesh Forum, Moulvibazar District Branch, Corruption-Free Bangladesh Youth Forum, and Corruption-Free Bangladesh Student Forum, as well as journalists, professionals, and citizens from various walks of life.
