Several dead turtles have washed up on the coast of Teknaf Upazila in Cox’s Bazar. These dead turtles were seen at the mouth of the Naf River and on Gholar Char beach in Shah Parir Island in the upazila. Locals say that three dead turtles have washed up in a day. These olive ridley sea turtles weigh 20 to 25 kg. One dead turtle washed up on the south side of the Shah Parir Island jetty ghat on Monday morning and two on the Gholar Char beach of Shah Parir Island on Sunday, said local resident Dil Mohammad. Abu Taleb, a shopkeeper at Shah Parir Island jetty ghat, said that a large dead turtle had washed up on the shore of the Naf River in the tidal water next to the jetty. The turtle was rotting and emitting a foul smell. This is causing distress to tourists and locals. Locals believe that the turtles may have died after being caught in fishermen’s nets, being hit by large boats plying in the sea, or coming to lay eggs on the shore.
