Jatka Conservation Week has started from April 8 to April 14 with the aim of producing additional hilsa under the theme ‘If Jatka fishing stops, Hilsa will be caught in nets’.
A discussion meeting and boat rally were held at Nilkamal Char in Haimchar Upazila of Chandpur on Tuesday (April 8) afternoon to mark the inauguration of the Jatka Conservation Week. Local administration, public representatives, fishermen and media workers participated in the rally.
Deputy Director of Local Government of Rajbari District Md. Mazharul Islam was present as the chief guest at the discussion meeting and boat rally.
Under the chairmanship of Goalanda Upazila Executive Officer Md. Nahidur Rahman and moderated by Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Md. Anwar Islam Pilot, Rajbari District Assistant Police Superintendent Md. Mizanur Rahman, District Fisheries Officer Md. Nazmul Huda, Bangladesh Coast Guard Bisuji Outpost Rajbari’s Goalanda Branch CPO Md. Shafiqul Islam, etc., were present as special guests in the program. Daulatdia Bazar Businessmen Council President Md. Mohan Mondal, Upazila Fishermen’s Family President Md. Aslam Mollah, General Secretary Achel Bepari, etc. also spoke at the event.
On the occasion of Jatka Conservation Week 2025 (April 8-14), various programs have been undertaken to increase public awareness, including miking, distribution of leaflets and posters, and discussion meetings with fishermen and businessmen.
Chief guest Md. Mazharul Islam said, ‘Hilsha is our national resource. To protect this resource, everyone must be more aware of stopping the catching of jatka. With the combined efforts of the administration and the people, the production of hilsha will increase further.’
Upazila Executive Officer Md. Nahidur Rahman said, “The government is taking a strict stance on Jatka conservation. We will conduct regular campaigns and also work to create awareness among the local people.”
