A tomtom driver named Mujibur Rahman (37) was beaten and stabbed to death by organized miscreants in Cox’s Bazar over a previous dispute. Police have arrested four people, including three brothers, in this incident. Mujibur Rahman is the son of the deceased Abdul Jalil of Halima Para, Ward No. 7 of Cox’s Bazar Municipality. Locals said that a few days ago, a person named Anwar Hossain bought an easy bike on installments. Which was later stolen. Later, Mujibur Rahman recovered it from a gang of thieves for Tk 5,000 and handed it over to Anwar. However, Anwar did not pay the promised money. When Mujib demanded the money, an argument broke out between them.
On March 16, around 7:30 pm, Mujibur Rahman was staying at Yasin Arafat’s Tomtom garage in Pahartali’s Notun Bazar area. At that time, Anwar Hossain and his two brothers Mostafa Shaon and Imran and some others launched an ambush. CCTV footage shows that Mujib was talking to a driver. Suddenly, three or four youths came and started beating him. They were seen holding knives and firearms. Mujib was dragged out of the garage and stabbed repeatedly.
An auto driver named Delwar said that before he could understand anything, they started beating Mujib. At one stage, he stabbed him and fled. Another named Selim said, he saw bullets in the hands of the attackers. Locals took Mujib to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital in a seriously injured condition, where the doctor declared him dead. Meanwhile, at a press conference on Monday afternoon, Box Bazar Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Kamrul Islam said, “We identified those involved immediately after the murder and launched an operation. Within eight hours, four people, including the main perpetrator Mostafa Shaon, were arrested. They are Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa Prakash Shaon (22), Anwar Hossain (33), Imran Hossain (19) and Md. Karim (28). RAB-15 Commander Lieutenant Colonel Md. Kamrul Islam said that legal action is being taken against them. Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ilias Khan said that Selina Akhter, the wife of the deceased, has filed a case against five people in this incident.
