On March 6, several national dailies published news headlines alleging corruption against the acting principal of Laksam Pilot Girls High School. Since the news was published, the school’s office assistant Mahbub and his colleagues have been working day and night to reconcile old accounts under the instructions of the acting Headmaster.

After receiving the news from a reliable source, I went to the ground and found out the truth. After going to the ground, I saw that the work of reconciling the accounts was going on day and night by locking the outside of the headmaster’s room and cutting inside. Going inside the headmaster’s office through another room, I saw four female teachers busy reconciling the accounts of the primary branch and office assistant Mahbub was working on reconciling the accounts of the secondary branch. Upon receiving the news, the headmaster came to the room and showed excitement.

When the headmaster arrived, the office assistants and primary branch teachers who were busy with the task of reconciling old accounts by cutting and reading became panicked and did not want to talk to the reporter in the presence of the headmaster. When asked a question, the headmaster himself stepped forward and tried to answer the confusing questions. The reporter has preserved the pictures and videos of the reconciling old accounts by cutting and reading.
Sources said that Laksam Upazila Executive Officer Md. Kausar Hamid has formed a three-member audit committee to ensure transparency and accountability in the work of Laksam Pilot Girls High School. The audit team formed on February 13 was ordered to submit the audit report within 10 working days. But it is learnt that acting headmaster Rasraj Das is not assisting the formed committee with information. It is learnt that the convener of the committee, Laksam Upazila Statistics Officer Khandaker Masum Billah, has informed the Upazila Executive Officer in writing that the committee will not investigate as this has hampered the investigation of irregularities and corruption.
In this regard, Laksam Upazila Executive Officer Md. Kausar Hamid said, “I have heard various reports of misconduct, irregularities and corruption against the acting headmaster of Laksam Pilot Girls High School. I have seen news published against him in newspapers. I have instructed the Secondary Education Officer to investigate the published news and submit a report, and a report will be submitted to the Education Board in this regard.”

Laksam Upazila Secondary Education Officer Nasir Uddin said, “I have seen various irregularities and corruption of the headmaster of Laksam Pilot Girls High School in the news papers. Laksam Upazila Executive Officer has instructed me to investigate this matter and submit a report. The investigation is ongoing.”
The convener of the audit committee, Laksam Upazila Statistics Officer Khandaker Masum Billah, said, “The Laksam Upazila Executive Officer had appointed me as the convener of a 3-member committee to audit Laksam Pilot Girls High School. But since the school authorities did not cooperate in the audit work, I submitted the report without auditing.”

The school’s guardian, Md. Nizam Uddin, said, “There has been a lot of corruption in the institution in the past. Now, no more opportunities for corruption will be given. We have been playing a vocal role in preventing corruption at Laksam Pilot Girls High School and will continue to do so in the future. I have spoken to the UNO regarding this and he is also taking an effective role in preventing corruption. I hope that corruption can be eradicated from this school.”
