Madaripur Correspondent:
Miscreants cut down almost half a hundred flowering and fruit-bearing trees in a journalist’s lemon garden in the dark of night in Kalkini, Madaripur.
The incident took place in the Pangasiya area of Ward No. 1 of Kalkini Municipality early on Friday (March 14).
The victim, Roni Ahmed Nipul, Kalkini correspondent of the daily Kalbela, complained that he had planted more than half a hundred lemon tree seedlings of different species in a small area. While the seedlings were growing, miscreants cut down the flowering and fruit-bearing trees in the lemon garden in the dark of night, destroying the garden. I have suffered a loss of about two lakh taka in this incident. Someone may have done this damage to me out of enmity. Today, cutting down trees can cause a bigger incident another day. Therefore, I will seek legal recourse for a fair trial. Kalkini Police Station has inspected the scene of the incident.
Local residents said that they heard the sound of someone breaking something with a stick around 3 am last night, shortly before the sehri meal. However, no one dared to go out in fear of robbers. When they woke up in the morning, they saw that someone had cut down the trees. We all condemn this act of hostility towards the trees.
In this regard, Kalkini Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Sohel Rana said, “We have come to know about the cutting of lemon trees in the garden of a journalist brother in the dark of night. The police have already visited the scene. If we receive a written complaint in this regard, necessary legal action will be taken after investigation.”
