National Desk: The Chief Advisor to the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has urged the Foreign Minister of the West African country of Gambia, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, to take initiatives to stop new Rohingya refugees from crossing the border into Bangladesh.

He made this call when he met Dr. Mamadou Tangara at Jamuna State Guest House in the capital on Wednesday (March 12). The Chief Advisor’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder gave this information.

Citing the meeting, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said that the Gambian Foreign Minister informed the Chief Advisor about the progress of the genocide case filed against Myanmar. He said that Gambia has filed this case to ensure justice for the Rohingya Muslim community. The country is working to complete it successfully.

The Gambian Foreign Minister said, “I can assure you that the President and the people of Gambia are committed to this. The President of Gambia is fully supportive of this and wants to bring it forward.

“Professor Muhammad Yunus commended Gambia’s steadfast commitment and efforts to take the initiative on behalf of the Rohingya and to bring about a successful outcome to this case. We want the case to be successful. We seek your support. This is a great help for us.”

Professor Yunus highlighted Dhaka’s efforts to mobilize humanitarian aid for the Rohingya and called for providing food and medical assistance to Rakhine as well as stopping the flow of new refugees across the border into Bangladesh. The Principal Adviser called for further deepening trade and cooperation between the two countries.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the signing of an agreement to work jointly on UN peacekeeping operations. They also discussed the potential of microfinance to eradicate poverty in Africa and establish peace and stability in conflict-affected areas.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative of the Chief Advisor, and Lamia Morshed, Head and Senior Secretary, SDG Affairs, Government of Bangladesh.
