A youth named Md. Farhad has been accused of obstructing a protest march by students of Government Women’s College against rape in Pirojpur. The incident took place on the road in front of the Pirojpur Civil Surgeon’s Office at around 12:15 pm on Wednesday (March 12). Later, the students detained the youth and handed him over to the police.
Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Sobhan confirmed the matter. The arrested Farhad is the son of Md. Mainul Islam of Khamkata area of Pirojpur Sadar Upazila.
Hira Sheikh, a first-year HSC student at Pirojpur Government Women’s College, said that the students formed a human chain in front of the college in the morning demanding the maximum punishment for rape and protesting violence against women. After the human chain, they took a protest march and returned to the college via the old bus stand and Saidi Foundation.
Student Hira Sheikh said, “A young man started videotaping our procession from in front of the Saidi Foundation and made various indecent comments. Later, he asked us to chant ‘Jai Bangla’ slogan. When we stopped him from videotaping, he attacked and tried to escape. Later, with the help of locals, we arrested him and handed him over to the police.”
Student Mirana Islam said, “We took to the streets to demand justice for the rape. However, we were harassed during that procession. We want a fair trial and demand to ensure our safety.”
