The Islamic University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders and activists formed a human chain demanding the death penalty for rapists in front of the university’s main gate around 12 p.m. on Monday.
The demonstration was held as part of the nationwide program by the JCD to protest the increasing incidence of violence against women. At that time, protesters held placards with slogans such as “Rapists Have No Place in Bangladesh,” “No More Tears of Our Sisters,” “We Want Justice,” and “Tonu, Tania, Nusrat, Aasiya—Who’s Next?”
IU JCD member secretary Masud Rumi Mithun said, “On behalf of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, we demand the highest punishment for rapists. We hope that such heinous crimes will never occur again.”
IU JCD convener Sahed Ahmed said, “Before becoming a legal advisor, Asif Nazrul used to make strong statements about justice. Does he not see what is happening in the country now? Under the guise of reforms, the country is in chaos. Women are facing harassment in various workplaces. Every woman has the right to wear what she chooses without interference. We demand an end to all forms of oppression and a safe Bangladesh for all.”
