Md. Zillur Rahman Jewel, Golachipa:
The incident took place in the Gohin Khali area of Chhotabaishdia Union in Rangabali Upazila of Patuakhali.
According to sources, this season, watermelon farmers from Gahinkhali village of Chhotabaishdia Union have been marketing watermelons by waterway every year, setting up a temporary wharf near the river, as per the convenience of the farmers.
But this year, some local strongmen are using watermelon farmers to form a syndicate, pretending to be activists of the BNP political party, and are evading government revenue by building illegal ghats on private land, thereby evading government revenue taxes.
When Sarjamin Chhotabaishdia Union’s Land Deputy Assistant Officer Md. Zahidul Islam Gohin went to the vacant area to collect the khas collection or rent as per the government regulations for constructing ghats on government khas land, the rabbi, who introduced himself as a worker of the Jubo Dal of Rangabali Upazila, got angry with him and used abusive language to falsely accuse him of extortion.
When asked about this, Md. Zahidul Islam, the Deputy Assistant Land Officer of Chhotabaishdia Union, said,
I am a government employee, my job is to collect the khas collection or revenue in accordance with the legal instructions of the higher authorities if someone uses government khas land illegally as per the government order.
He further informed that when he went to the illegally constructed ghat in the Gohinkhali area, some land robbers, including Rabbi Hawlader’s father Rattan Hawlader, Imran Hawlader’s father Bablu Hawlader, Helal Hawlader’s father Hashem Hawlader, Iliach Paeda, Monsher Ali Paeda, Shukur Khalifa, and Kalu, occupied 200 acres of land out of the total 380 acres of land in the BRS 01 Khas Khatian of East Haridrapkhali Mouza, registered at JL No. 130 of Chhotabaisdia Union under Rangabali Upazila. Khalifa, Imam Khalifa, father Shukur Khalifa, Russell Howlader, father Rattan Howlader, Bashir Majhi, father Abul Majhi, Jewel Nagar, father Jabbar Nagar and Dulal Mollah, father Nasir Mollah) have illegally occupied government khas land by using local poor farmers. He claims that they have formed a local syndicate taking advantage of the farmers’ weakness and are starting various propaganda against me.
When the Jubo Dal activist called Rabbi’s cell phone regarding this matter, his wife received the call and said he was not at home.
Rangabali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Iqbal Hasan told Sangbader Pata,
I am not aware of this matter. No farmer has made a verbal or written complaint to me. If any farmer makes a written complaint, action will be taken against the said officer.
However, I want the real truth to come out.
Regarding the incident, Patuakhali Deputy Commissioner Abu Hasnat Mohammad Arif said on his mobile phone, “The UNO has not informed me about the incident, but if they do, necessary action will be taken.”
