Md. Lipu Mandal (Member), a member of Ujanchar’s UP No. 8, has been arrested on charges of assault, serious injury and molestation for forcibly obstructing the construction of a dirt road on agricultural land in Goalanda, Rajbari.
Yesterday, Tuesday (February 25), S.I. Selim Molla along with the force arrested the subject from his own house at approximately 7:30 am. Goalanda Ghat Police Station confirmed this in a press release at 10 am today (Wednesday).
Local sources said that if the locals tried to build a dirt road by destroying the crop land and forcing it over the houses, it would cause a big problem. In order to normalize the situation, the upazila administration temporarily suspended the work. After talking to both sides and reaching an agreement, the authorities ordered the work to be done peacefully. However, a fight broke out between the two sides when the local UP member tried to forcefully build the road.
In the case statement, Shirin Akhter said, “They tried to forcibly build a dirt road. When we tried to stop them, local UP member Lipu Mandal and some others attacked us with domestic and foreign weapons. In the indiscriminate beating, some of my family members including me were seriously injured. And they tore my clothes and my sisters and sexually assaulted me. Hearing the subsequent screams and cries, the locals admitted the other members of my family to the Goalanda Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Goalanda Ghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rakibul Islam said, “Upon receiving information about the fight and casualties, the police quickly normalized the situation at the scene. Arrangements were made to provide medical treatment to others. In addition, the culprits were identified. We have arrested one person in this case. The police are working to arrest the rest.”
