Habibur Rahman Munna: Noting that instability has been observed in Bangladesh for some time, BNP Acting Chairman Tarek Rahman said, “Many questions have arisen in the minds of the people regarding the interim government that is in charge of running the country.”

He made these comments while joining the Comilla Metropolitan BNP conference as the chief guest virtually from London on Tuesday afternoon (February 25). Tarique Rahman started his speech at 5 pm. He spoke for about half an hour.

The acting chairman of BNP said, “We have been supporting the interim government since its formation. Because we wanted this government to restore the people’s lost voting rights through a fair and impartial election. But we are noticing that different people in the government are saying different things about restoring the people’s rights.”

Stating that the previous autocratic government had destroyed every sector of the country, Tarique Rahman said, ‘To restore the fortunes of the people of the country, it is necessary to bring stability to the country. But the statements of some people in the interim government are creating an unstable situation in the country. I want to make it clear that we will still help this government. We hope that the interim government maintains the neutrality that the people expect from it.’

He said, “There may be differences among political parties. But differences cannot be created through division. This will harm the country and democratic parties. Therefore, we have to remain united. The more united we are, the more the conspiracies of those planning against democracy will be thwarted.”

The BNP acting chairman also said, “It remains to be seen who will benefit if the elections are delayed in Bangladesh at this time. BNP believes that the people are the source of all power. If the practice of democracy can be continued in Bangladesh, then we can keep the people of Bangladesh safe from conspiracies. If the right to vote is guaranteed in the country, then BNP will be organizationally strong.”

He said, “BNP has reached this position today through six elections over 45-46 years, through various movements and struggles, through absenteeism and false cases. In some elections, BNP formed the government with the support of the people, in some elections, BNP formed the opposition government. BNP has become the people’s political party today. However, we will continue to try to gain more people’s expectations in the future.”

Tarek Rahman said, ‘BNP speaks about the people. The goal and objective of a political party is how to keep the people involved with its party. There is a plan, how to form the government. The only way to do this is to form a people’s government through votes. As a political party, our main objective is to go to the people. Since we believe in the rule of the people, we believe in the politics of votes, so we will ask for votes, we will ask for elections – this is a natural thing. But many people cannot accept this natural thing.’

Addressing the newly formed president and general secretary of the Metropolitan BNP, Tarique Rahman said, “Your main and one of the responsibilities is to work to gain the trust of the common people of Comilla Metropolitan City in the party. The purpose of this conference was to bring out the right leadership. We have to work to convey the ideology and policies of our party to every person in Comilla Metropolitan City.”

He said, “We will request the council to fulfill the demands not only of Comilla metropolis but also of the entire Bangladesh for which hundreds and thousands of our colleagues have been subjected to disappearances, murders, killings and disappearance cases. This should be our pledge.”

Tarek Rahman said, “It is not enough to ensure the right to vote, we also have to ensure the right to vote for which people have given their lives.”

Addressing all the leaders and activists present at the latest conference, Tareke Rahman said, ‘We have to continue the movement to achieve the rights of the people of the country. We have to present various plans for the welfare of the people of the country. Other parties will also do the same. The people will decide who they will give the responsibility of running the country in the future. Now is the turn of building the country. Our efforts must continue to build the country’s state structure. This is our promise.’

Earlier, at around 3 pm, BNP National Executive Committee Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu declared the conference open by hoisting the national flag and releasing balloons. Later, Comilla Metropolitan BNP Joint Convener VP Nazrul presented a condolence motion. Metropolitan BNP Member Secretary Yusuf Molla Tipu presented the organizational report.
