At least 20 resorts have been gutted in a massive fire at the Sajek Valley tourist center in Rangamati’s Baghaichhari upazila.
The fire broke out behind the ‘Montana Resort’ at around 1 pm on Monday, said Idra Jit Chakma, finance secretary of the Sajek Resort Cottage Owners’ Association.
Baghaichhari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shirin Akhter said that local people and the administration are working to put out the fire.
Idra Jit Chakma said, “The flames of the fire spread everywhere. More than 20 resorts have already burned down. This number may increase. Local people and the army are working to control the fire.”
Baghaichhari UNO Shirin Akhter said, “The army is working to control the fire at the Sajek tourist center. Local people are helping them. The fire service has left for Sajek from Dighinala.”
Locals said the fire started at the Vacation Resort in the afternoon. However, it is not yet known how the fire started. Due to the absence of the fire service in Sajek, the fire is being extinguished quickly.
The Vacation Resort, Eco Valley Resort, Meghchhut Resort, Montana Restaurant and Marwati Restaurant have been burnt to ashes in the fire. Due to the absence of the fire service, the locals have tried to extinguish the fire but have not been able to bring it under control.
UNO Shirin Akhter believes that the fire started from an electrical short circuit.
Regarding the fire in Sajek, Anwarul Islam, an officer of the central media cell of the Fire Service, said that since there is no fire station in Sajek, a unit of Dighinala Fire Station has started extinguishing the fire.
In addition, two units from Matiranga Station, two from Longadu Station, two from Panchhari Fire Station, two from Khagrachhari Sadar, one from Ramgarh and two from Laxmichhari Fire Station have left for the scene.
He said, “It takes time to reach due to the impassable road. There is a water shortage at the accident site.”
